Monster trucks! Everybody loves them, and anyone who tells you otherwise is a dull and boring... dull guy. Yeah, adjectives are amazing, aren't they? Well, descriptive words aside, Monster Truck Maniac is a fine game.

Monster Truck Maniac may look like a racing game, because, really, it's what you'd expect from a game about trucks. On the contrary, it's actually one of those distance games where you have to go the farthest or jump the highest. But with land mines. Yup. Land mines.

The graphics are simple enough, not much is spent in the way of making things look all snazzy. In all honesty, a little bit more effort could have been spent in the snaz department, but despite that, it snazzes well enough for its purposes. Whether or not "snazzy" can be parsed that way is another question though. Still, the game does snaz fine, as you're not really looking much at the graphics and are instead trying to get a high score.

The controls are simple, you hit left and right to move. That's about it. There are a few levels where you have to use the mouse to adjust the starting ramp, but other than that, there are no other fancy controls. It's all about timing, control, and careful and delicate placing of the monster behemoth that is your indestructible monster truck.

Why indestructible you ask? Well, because of the aforementioned land mines. For most of the game, you're trying to get as far as possible. How you do this partially depends on your initial jump. The other part depends on how well you hit different land mines. Said land mines will, rather than blasting apart your fragile metal frame, blast you sky high while leaving you intact. While physics goes and cries in the corner, your monster truck will use this boost to gain even greater distances. On some levels, where you're just tasked with going as far as you can, you don't have any control over when and how you hit the mines. On other levels, such as the one where you have to cross as much open water as you can, you have to carefully maneuver yourself so as to hit the mines at just the right angle to send you just the right distance. There are also other levels where you have to keep climbing sky-high as you jump inexplicably floating mine after inexplicably floating mine to get your truck to rocket skywards.

Sure, it's downright silly. Sure, it's improbably. But hey, it's great fun, and you should definitely give Monster Truck Maniac a go!
